For a long time I've been using a program called Power Grab 2002 on Windows to download binaries from newsgroups. There's lots of interesting stuff available there. The problems I have with this app is two-fold: 1) It's no longer supported. As you can see from the name, it hasn't been updated in 4 years. That means it is likely to stop working at some point. I did stumble across the source code for it though (I think). 2) It doesn't run on the Mac.
I've been trying to move myself over to the Mac completely for a while now, but there are still some programs I haven't found a good replacement for. This was one of them. Recently, while listening to a Mac podcast where they talked about little Mac apps they liked, they mentioned an app called Unison. Unison is a newsgroup reader, from a company called Panic Software. It does newsgroup reading, it downloads binaries, and it even lets you preview some of the binaries within the app itself! It's really cool that you can go to one of the images newsgroups and see all the images right there in the app as you are browsing! It's very 'iPhoto-ish'. Unfortunately, the app is not free - it costs $24.95. Despite that, after spending a few minutes with it, I fell in love with it. It's a beautiful program and it does everything I need. I bought it and now I can eliminate one more Windows program from my daily life.
