Yesterday, I watched the premeire of NBC's new show 'Heroes'. I gotta say, I like this show! It has definate potential.
Heroes is the story of a bunch of ordinary people that suddenly develop 'special' abilities. One can fly, one can predict the future, one can teleport, one can heal any wound, etc. They eventually discover that something really bad is going to happen and they set out to stop it. If it sounds like a certain comic book, it should. One of the show's writers is Jeph Loeb, a well known comic book writer. Because of that, it should come as no surprise that there are references to comic books in the show. In the first episode alone, they mention an issue of the X-Men. In the scenes from the second episode, they show a comic book playing a central part of the story. I keep expecting a bald guy in a wheelchair to show up and start leading the people with special abilities... It is described in the story that these people are 'the next stage of evolution'... Can you say mutants? I knew you could. The show is also very 'geeky'. In just the first episode, we have references to comic books, Star Trek and even Linux makes an appearance. Maybe that's why I like the show - it appeals to my 'inner geek'.
As for the characters, they are an interesting bunch. You have the teenage cheerleader who can heal from any wound. (a.k.a Wolverine). You have the drug addict who paints pictures that predict the future (a.k.a. Destiny). You have the nerdy Japanese guy who can teleport (a.k.a. Nightcrawler). You have the boy genius. You have the flying guy. You have the Indian cabbie, who's actually a geneticist in hiding.
The powers also seem to run in families. The boy genius' mother has some kind of multiple personality power (or something, that one isn't very clear). Plus the flying guy has a brother with certain abilities too. (To say more would give away the ending of the episode).
There are also some hints that several of the people with powers are not being raised by their real parents or that the identity of their parents is unknown. This leads to the question of who are their parents and is the fact that their parents are unknown related to their abilities? It should be interesting to find out.
